Schweich to Perl

After the heat of the previous day it was a nu relief to wake up to cool and overcast day, even with rain threatening. After a good breakfast including muesli - unusual in Germany, we rode on to Trier which boasts many relics from the Roman era.
We rode into the town centre past the Porta Nigra, a very impressive Roman gate. Light rain started and we took refuge in a nice little cafe. Then past the central square, the imposing cathedral, Karl Marx's birthplace, and back across the river over the Roman bridge.
Quite pleasant riding despite the light rain, we continued along the Mosel until we crossed into Luxembourg at Wasserbillig where we stopped at a cafe by the river for lunch.
Riding through Luxembourg was very good, with excellent bike paths or lanes next to the road along the river.
We were stopped at Remich when we spotted a mother duck having trouble getting one of her ducklings back to the river. The duckling kept trying to climb a kerb and falling back down into the gutter while the agitated mother watched and quacked.
A young man walking past helped the duckling over the kerb. Tracey thought there might be others and she was right, finding two others and helping them to the river and their mother.
Pat booked somewhere to stay in Perl, then cancelled the booking when we realised it was too far out out town. We decided to just ride on to Perl an find a room when we got there.
After a long day, the climb up the hill to the centre of Perl was like a cruel joke.
We sat on the steps of the tourist info office, which was closed, to look on the internet for a hotel. A passing local lady pushing a bike indicated she could find us a room. We followed her back the way we had come to another lady Tracey had already spoken to who had no vacant rooms. We waited around for about half an hour while a lot of German was spoken and several phone calls were made.
Eventually we followed a third lady who led us in her car to a house. The lady indicated that we should wait there until the owner came home. Tracey waited while Pat rode to the nearby supermarket to get some food for dinner. The owner turned up and we had an apartment for the night.
