Colmar to Erstein via the Route de Vin

An easy exit from Colmar led us to the route du vin. A series of exquisite small towns and villages separated by steep rolling vineyard covered hills. Although a little touristy, this area is a joy to cycle through.

We rode through Ingersheim, Katzenthal, Kientzheim, Kaysersburg, Riquewihr, Hunawihr, Ribeauville and then headed for St Hippolyte. Our plan was for Pat to ride from there up to Haut Koenigsbourg while Tracey rode on to Kintzheim, where we understood she could catch a shuttle bus up to the castle. Our estimates of the likely success of this plan were not very high. The plan worked beautifully with both of us arriving at the top within seconds of each other. The castle was certainly worth a visit. We meet back down at Kintzheim and rode to the Canal du Rhone au Rhin, to rejoin the Rhein Radweg. A very pleasant ride along the canal led us to Erstein, where we stayed at a nice hotel overlooking the river Ill. As it happened it was midsummer and the town was celebrating with a music festival. We strolled around eating saucisse blanc ( pork sausages) and drinking beer and listening to the local musicians.
