Erstein to Heidelberg

We had a coffee and croissant breakfast at a cafe near our hotel and rode back to the canal route towards Strasburg. It was a very pleasant ride along the canal with the sun shining. With some help from a German cycling couple we found the tourist info centre then did a riding tour around the highlights of central Strasbourg.
The Notre Dame cathedral in the main square is too big to photograph. Apparently it is the sixth tallest church in the world, and for several centuries was the tallest building in the world.
We then headed across the river to Kehl in Germany to catch a train to Heidelberg. The trip involved two changes of train. At the first one we found our way to the platform to catch the next train. A train pulled in a few minutes before ours was due to leave so we got on. Fortunately Tracey asked someone if it was going to Karlsruhe, our next stop where we planned to have a look at the town on our way through. We were on the wrong train, and one helpful local physically stopped the door from closing while we got ourselves and our loaded bikes off.
Three minutes later we were on the right train.
At Karlsruhe we got off and headed for the city centre. It was raining, and after donning raincoats and putting on pannier covers we decided it wasn't going to stop any time soon and headed back to the station to catch the next train to Heidelberg.
At Heidelberg we easily rode the few kilometres to our hotel. It was in a great spot right on the Neckar River and a short walk from the main square, the cathedral and the castle. We had a great view from our window.
We had dinner at a very quaintly decorated restaurant nearby. Pat's herring dinner was interesting.
